INTRODUCING RXR PROTECT – CHEST PROTECTORS

IT’S A NEW ERA FOR CHEST-PROTECTORS!

RXR is revolutionizing protection in the action sports world with its exclusive patented “air shock absorber” technology. Imagine a body protector that absorbs 5 times more energy than plastic and 8 times more than foam material.

It is time for BMX and MTB riders to wear real chest-protectors! There’s no “roost” to be protected from in BMX, Down Hill or Free Ride, and the 30 year-old technology of plastic roost-deflectors do not protect as much as our RXR Protect chest-protectors. Keep your back and chest safe. Ride with Air!!

High protection, lightness, comfort and mobility are the 4 main features of the Organic and Full chest-protectors from RXR Protect. The ASA (Air Shock Absorber) technology ensures maximal body protection, high mobility and light weight, the Organic weighing 1.9 lbs and the Full chest protector weighing 3 lbs.

The materials used make you forget you are wearing a chest-protector. Worn under or over a jersey or jacket, the RXR body armor is comfortable and very protective.

The secret of RXR Protect is air contained in a very durable ergonomic inflatable bladder with a number of interacting chambers that allow the air to move from chamber to chamber. In case of a fall or impact the air moves between chambers absorbing the energy from the point of impact before it reaches your body.

AT SECOND RACE OF JEEP® KING OF THE MOUNTAIN 2007 MOUNTAIN BIKING WORLD PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CALIFORNIA

Grand Finale on Sept. 1 in Beaver Creek, Colo. to Determine Women’s and Men’s World Professional Champions

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – August 18, 2007 – On top of the podium was none other than the red-hot Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands, who is vying for her own UCI World Cup Championship with two wins already in the 2007 season. She kept her form in San Luis Obispo, and the payoff was her second-ever Jeep King of the Mountain victory and a jump to the top of the overall standings heading into the final race of the season.

Thousands of race fans filled the stands and lined the racecourse in San Luis Obispo, providing a home court atmosphere for the seven invited Golden State athletes battling for a share of the record $100,000 cash purse and the season-ending reward of a new 2008 Jeep Liberty. The scene is likely to be similar at the Jeep King of the Mountain grand finale on September 1 in Beaver Creek, Colo., when the points will be worth double value and every heat counts in deciding the new World Professional Champions.

In the women’s competition, Beerten earned a bye in the first round based on her top spot in the time trials, before racing past five-time British National Champion Fionn Griffiths of the U.K. in the semi-finals to reach the Championship Heat. Meeting her there would be Melissa Buhl of Chandler, Ariz., the recently crowned U.S. National Champion and former NORBA Champion, Buhl’s day included a first round win over open qualifier Leana Gerrard of Bellingham, Wash., a collegiate National Champion and NORBA titlist, and a semi-final defeat of rival Tara Llanes of Los Alamitos, Calif., the 2006 USA Cycling Downhill National Champion and two-time national four-cross champion. In the finals, Beerten won the first race but lost the second race, winning the title on a close time differential. The pair now stands tied for first place in the overall season standings. Griffiths held off Llanes in the Consolation Heat to place third.

“I felt really good out there, and this course really suited my riding style,” said Beerten. “In the finals, I knew that after winning the first race, it was critical that I stay with Melissa (Buhl) in the second race, even if she got ahead. I was able to get the win, and this is going to be a great focus for me heading into the last race of the season as I really want that title and will give it 100 percent.”

The Jeep King of the Mountain series will now head to the Beaver Creek Resort in Beaver Creek, Colo., on Saturday, September 1, for the grand finale, where the women’s and men’s World Professional Champion will be named. World Professional Champions are crowned based on a system of cumulative points earned throughout the season. In Beaver Creek, the point totals will be worth double value, meaning any of the top contenders has a chance to capture the crown.

Each race of the 2007 Mountain Biking World Professional Championships will be televised to a national broadcast audience on CBS Sports, representing the most expansive coverage of professional mountain bike racing in recent history. The race from San Luis Obispo will air on CBS Sports on September 23 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. EST (check local listings).

LITTLE JOHNNY GOES TO THE SPA – KAT DUFFELS

August 21, 2007

SOURCE: KAT DUFFELS

So last summer I got a sweet little 4 inch travel bike that I named “Little Johnny”. Since I got the little guy we’ve managed to hit up almost every riding spot in the Lower Mainland plus a tonne of amazing trails in the Interior like William’s Lake, Kamloops, Kelowna, Merrit, etc …

To say the least, I’ve pounded Little Johnny pretty hard! To handle the bigger trails I built Little Johnny up to be quite beefy- 2.5 Maxxis Minions, a heavy dirt jump seat, a 5th element coil shock, and a 7 inch Boxxer World Cup. It got to the point where Little Johnny weighed more than my friend’s V10! It was definitely time for a trip to the spa for him!

When little Johnny first got to the spa.

Initial weigh in

First things first, Little Johnny started off with a relaxing bum massage. His heavy black dirt jump seat was replaced it with a sexy white WTB Deva. It’s WTB’s new women’s race saddle. More narrow and padded than the men’s seat, but still light and sleek like a race saddle. It has got titanium rails which helps fring the weight down to only 225g! The only issue I have is that the white leather is hard to keep pristine when riding in the mud.

Old seat:

katspbpic1434330.jpg katspbpic1434325.jpg katspbpic1434329.jpg

New Seat:

katseatmpbpic1434331.jpg

katseatpsotmpbpic1434336.jpg

After the massage, Little Johnny was treated to a pedicure. I took of his 2.5 Minions and replaced them with Hutchinson’s Barracuda 2.3 MRC Tubeless tires with MX casing. All that means is that the tires are designed similar to motor-cross tires, which makes them really strong, even though they are lighter weight.

Remove old rubber after a good pounding:

katoldrubber2.jpg katoldrubberspbpic1434323.jpg

New Rubber is always better for pounding:

katnewrubber1.jpg

katnewrubber2.jpg

I am really surprised that I did not notice more of a difference in handling from my 2.5’s to my 2.3’s. I felt just as confident in corners and in tight and technical sections. The Barracuda’s have small square knobs that increase traction plus, reinforced lateral knobs, which help in corners. The biggest difference between the tires is that the 2.3’s have much less rolling resistance, so I feel faster. (And we all know that if you feel faster-sooner or later you will be faster)

Fresh Pink Shift Housing:

katbrakehose.jpg katbreakhose2.jpg

Johnny’s final treatment was just to pretty him up a bit. While I was just changing my shifter cable and housing from regular wear and tear, I put on some bright pink Jagwire cable housing. The full-length pink looks really sweet! Plus, apparently some of the proceeds from the cable housing sales go to support breast cancer research. (I heard this from a friend of a friend- I could not find more information on the website but they may just be being modest.) If you’re interested in getting some, Jagwire is distributed by QBP in north america, so you can order it from your local bike shop through them. To learn more about Jagwire’s Pink Cable initiative, please visit www.pinkcables.com.

Weigh out when leaving the spa

When I got Little Johnny back from the spa he had lost over 2.5 lbs from changing just the tires and the seat. He felt like a new bike! A week after the spa I took Johnny to the Bear Mountain Downhill race in Mission, BC where him and I managed to pull out 2nd overall!

If you are looking for a set of Hutchinson tires, have your local shop contact KMI in Canada or go to their site for to find a dealer. WTB has a great dealer locator on their site as well, if your butt needs some luvin too.

NATIONAL DH CYCLING TEAM “WORLDS” FUNDRAISER EVENT

National Downhill Cycling Foundation of Canada “NDCFC” & 2007 Canadian National DH Cycling Team.

The NDCFC and the 2007 National DH cycling team is making history this month! The team is facing the reality of having no funding! The Canadian Cycling Association will offer no direct funding to the downhill cycling discipline which is in line with the levels of funding the CCA receives from Sport Canada – the protocol is to support Olympic sports and downhill cycling is not an Olympic sport.

micayla.jpg
Micayla Gatto

With 10 members on the National DH Team and no funding, manager/coach Chris Colbeck and the athletes have come up with a way to help themselves and the future of the sport! All are trying to travel to the biggest event of the year, the 2007 World Mountain Bike Championships in Fort William, Scotland September 8/9.

Chris Colbeck manager/coach of the 2007 National DH cycling team and former member himself is heading up the National Downhill Cycling Foundation of Canada “NDCFC”. “I will not sit back and watch the athletes struggle year after year after year financially! It paralyzes the future growth of the sport” We have organized a major fundraiser in Vancouver, BC to help the athletes.

SHARON BADER REVIEWS THE BRODIE ZEALOT

August 21, 2007

SOURCE: NSMB/SHARON BADER

zealot.jpg

The Zealot frame
I ride an 18″ frame so I chose this same size for the Zealot, and at first glance, it seemed a bit big. The standover is tight for me at 5’9″, but that could be the 160mm RockShox Lyrik fork that set the front end pretty high. It also gave the bike a beefier look. The heavy gussets and nice welds also lent to the bike’s beefy demeanour. At 37 lbs., the Zealot can’t really be classified as svelte. It came with a 100mm 10° stem. Swapping this out with a 0° rise or shorter stem would easily shorten the cockpit. I would have liked a 90mm stem on this puppy, but I adapted to the 100mm.

About Sharon
I am 5’9″, weigh 150 lbs, and have been riding for 15 years. As mentioned above, I come from an XC hardtail background but have moved with technology and ride a Titus RacerX for XC, a Turner 6 pack for DH and Shore riding, and a Norco Team Ti set up for more freeriding/shore/technical XC riding.
